GPUs don't reveal their weaknesses during casual web browsing. FurMark forces them to show everything. What makes it so effective at this is its signature fur rendering algorithm, tuned from the ground up to pull maximum power and generate intense, sustained heat. Unlike standard game benchmarks that run realistic, varied workloads you’d see in actual play, FurMark’s dense, highly parallel rendering is engineered to hit every part of the GPU at once. The resulting load is more extreme than what you’ll encounter in almost any real game, and that’s exactly the point. In 10 to 20 minutes of running the test, you can confirm if your cooler is performing as advertised, if your overclock is unstable, or if aging thermal paste is causing thermal throttling. It flushes out intermittent hardware issues that would only pop up during hours-long gaming sessions, far faster than any real-world playtest can.
You aren’t stuck with a single one-size-fits-all test, either. There’s solid flexibility to match the test to what you’re trying to check. You can select any resolution you need, from low 720p presets up to 4K and higher, depending on how much load you want to apply. You can also set the test to run for a fixed length of time, or stop automatically after a set number of frames — perfect for quick spot checks or longer burn-in stability runs. MSAA (multisample anti-aliasing) support lets you crank up the load even further; higher anti-aliasing levels put more stress on the GPU for a more aggressive stability test. For standardized benchmarking, there are pre-built presets for common resolutions like 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, so you can easily compare scores across different hardware setups.
Compatibility is another underrated strength, especially for anyone working with older systems. The tool runs on OpenGL 2.0, so it works with a massive range of graphics cards spanning decades of releases. Support covers NVIDIA GeForce 5, 6, 7, 8 series and all newer models, ATI Radeon 9600 and every subsequent AMD card, plus S3 Graphics Chrome 400 Series and later hardware. It doesn’t require the latest drivers or top-tier hardware to run, which makes it a reliable fallback for troubleshooting old or budget builds too.

Close all other running programs before launching the test. Background apps and games will take up GPU resources and skew your temperature and stability results.
Pick your preferred resolution and MSAA level from the main menu. For a standard stability check, 1080p with no MSAA is a reliable default setting.
Adjust your test mode in the settings: choose a timed run for general stability testing, or a frame-limited run for consistent benchmark scores. A 15 to 20 minute run is usually enough to catch most stability issues.
Start the test and monitor your GPU temperature closely. If temperatures rise past your card’s rated safe limit, exit the test immediately — it’s a clear sign your cooling system needs maintenance or upgrades.
